Peer Support in Mental Health and Substance Abuse

This course provides a thorough exploration of peer support as a transformative approach within mental health and substance use facilities. Participants will learn the foundational principles of peer support, including personal advocacy, engagement strategies, recovery and resiliency frameworks, community-building, and the ethical use of shared life experiences. This course blends current best practices, real-world case studies, and practical tools for implementing and sustaining effective peer support programs. By emphasizing lived experience and mutuality, the course equips learners to foster hope, empowerment, and lasting change in diverse behavioral health settings.

This course will award 1 continuing education hour.

Course Objectives

  1. Define peer support and describe its unique role in mental health and substance use recovery.
  2. Explain the foundational principles of peer support, including hope, empowerment, mutuality, and community.
  3. Demonstrate personal advocacy skills and support others in navigating complex systems and asserting their rights.
  4. Apply effective engagement techniques to build trust and participation among diverse populations.
  5. Integrate recovery and resiliency principles into peer support relationships using trauma-informed and strengths-based approaches.
  6. Facilitate and participate in community support systems, including peer-led groups and partnerships with external organizations.
  7. Utilize lived experience ethically and effectively to inspire hope and model recovery, while maintaining professional boundaries.
  8. Design and implement peer support programs within organizational settings, including training, supervision, and outcome measurement.
  9. Develop strategies for sustaining and scaling peer support services to maximize long-term impact and organizational value.

Leesa M. Robertson, M.Ed., CAP, LMHC

Ms. Robertson, M.Ed., CAP, LMHC, is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Florida and a Licensed Professional Counselor in Georgia. She is credentialed in alcohol and other drug counseling.

Beginning her career in the hospital setting, working in admissions, on the 24-hour unit, inpatient and IOP for both adults and adolescents, she went on to supervise a group of clinicians that went into medical-surgical hospitals to assess and place patients. She went into the outpatient setting, working with adults and families. Throughout her career, Ms. Robertson has focused on training and education through presenting live and authored coursework.
